Punctal Plugs

What Are Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs offer an effective, straightforward solution for managing dry eye symptoms by preserving your body’s natural tears instead of replacing them.

Understanding how punctal plugs help begins with how tears function. Tears continuously coat the eye’s surface, keeping it smooth, clear, and protected. They then drain through small openings called puncta at the inner corners of the eyelids. In dry eye, tears may evaporate or drain too quickly, leaving the eye under-lubricated.

Punctal plugs are small, biocompatible devices placed in these openings to partially or fully block tear drainage. This slows tear outflow, allowing natural and artificial tears to stay on the eye longer, which improves hydration and comfort.

How it Works

The procedure itself is quick and usually painless. After examining your eyelids, your provider gently inserts the plug into the punctum—no surgery required. Most people don’t feel the plug once it’s in place, though you might briefly notice a mild sensation, such as slight pressure or a tickling feeling, during insertion.

Benefits often include:

  • Longer-lasting natural tears on the ocular surface

  • Reduced need for artificial tears

  • Less burning, stinging, or gritty sensation

  • You may experience improved comfort during activities like reading, screen use, or contact lens wear.

Follow-up care after punctal plug placement is essential to ensure the treatment is effective and safe. Your doctor will check that the plugs remain properly positioned and are not causing irritation or excessive tearing. Because punctal plugs do not address the underlying causes of dry eye syndrome, follow-up visits also help monitor your condition and allow for treatment adjustments, particularly if meibomian gland dysfunction or inflammation is present. Ongoing care enables your doctor to refine your treatment plan for consistent, long-term relief.
